Konwakiton Glacier Mudflow on Mt. Shasta!

This weekend we’ve had some interested activity on Mt. Shasta. With the warm temperatures we had on Saturday and the drought conditons, the lower part of the Konwakiton Glacier blew out and created this mudflow.

It’s a pretty muddy mess. This is along Forest Service Rd 31. This is the location were the Mud Creek Diversion Structure is located.

Mud Creek Dam

This dam was built back in the twenties to divert the water. It’s gushing!

Mud Creek Culvert

It’s filled with glacier silt, debris and large rocks.

Crossing the flow!

Crossing the flow!

We decided to cross the mudflow and let me just say, “it’s muddy”!

And this is where it all started…the Konwakiton Glacier. Konwakiton means Muddy. Very appropriate.

My friend Steve Lewis went up on Saturday afternoon when it started and got some video~

Steve Lewis went up on the mountain to see what really happened.
With all the rumors and news media suggesting a glacier broke off of Mt. Shasta, I just could not accept that. It would be cool to photograph but I knew it had to be a “Glacial Dam” blowout and I knew the exact location it had to be so today, I climbed to appx 12,500ft to the head of Upper Mud Creek Canyon and sure enough it was a blowout in the channel below Konwakiton and Mud Creek Glaciers. Like a detective at a crime scene, it was clearly obvious and so I can assure everyone there was NOT a broke off piece of glacier, not even an ice chip had broken. There is some old glacial ice in the channel but not connected to any glacier. The media went wild, oh my! I have many new photos on my personal FB page for those that have an interest…Thanks Steve!
Bluey loving it!

Looks like we will be getting cooler temperatures with a chance of rain~
