What’s Happening at Castle Lake…

With no snow in the near future, I’ve been wondering what the conditions are like at Castle and Heart Lake?

Castle Lake 12-09-2011, Klamath Mountain Range

I took a hike up to Heart Lake this morning to check out conditions. It’s absolutely beautiful for snow hiking.

There’s snow and a well booted path up but early morning makes it a icy hike up. Be prepared with the proper footwear.

Heart Lake

Heart Lake is frozen over. I didn’t see any skate tracks but did see foot tracks.

Here’s the scoop for safety and walking on ice from the National Association for Search and Rescue: 2 inches=walking, 4 inches=fishing, 5 inches=snowmobiles, 8-12 inches=vehicles

Castle Lake Up Close

There’s a nice thin layer of ice on Castle Lake.

This lake was once known to the Shasta and Wintu Indians as “Castle of the Devil”. They believed an evil spirit “Ku-Ku-Pa-Rick” lived in the lake and made the eerie echoing sounds heard in the winter. These noises were later to be discovered to be the movement of ice. It’s making those sounds!

and latest conditions on Mt. Shasta~

Avalanche Gulch 12-08-2011

Not much snow!

Down Gemini Tree

A great place to hang out and enjoy the mountain views!

Have a great weekend!

Current Mt. Shasta Conditions!

We are starting to get decent coverage.

Coverage Looking Good! November 26, 2011

Temps warming up, I decided to ski back down in the shaded trees.

A Few Turns!

We got almost 2 feet of freshies. A good base so far.

Looks like warm temps the next few days.

Keep doing the snow dance!

Autumn is here and very exciting news…

Autumn is in the air.

Colors of fall are just starting to change.

Castle Lake

If your looking for a good hike this weekend, Castle Lake offers excellent hiking and exploring opportunities.

Mt. Shasta's Lenticular Cloud

Enjoy the beautiful falls colors and have a great weekend!

Rim of Mud Creek Canyon and…SNOW!

This past week we finally made it to the rim of Mud Creek Canyon on Mt. Shasta.

Good navigation skills and a  bit of cross-country travel leads to this magical place.

Top of Mud Creek Canyon

From here are views of the Konwakiton Glacier and Falls.

Konwakiton Falls

These run usually during the summer and fall months.

Mud Creek Canyon

Mud Creek Canyon is the longest and oldest canyon on Mt. Shasta.

Old Ski Bowl

Tuesday morning I took a hike up the Old Ski Bowl to around 8,500 ft.

With this early start it may be two years in a row we’ll be skiing and saying, “Happy Halloween”

At 8,500 ft...

2-3 inches with a crust on the top. This is a good start.

Happy Fall!

Looks like we could get possible over a foot of snow in the next couple days!

http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?lat=41.37062534198901&lon=-122.19818115234375&site=mfr&smap=1&marine=0&unit=0&lg=en

and as of today, forecasters are calling for a mostly sunny weekend.

I’ll post as snow conditions accumulate!

Current Conditions for 10-5-2011

Bunny Flat

Wednesday morning before the storm.

County Snow Plow

Thanks as always for doing a great job! Road is plowed to Lower Old Ski Bowl Parking area.

Whoo-hoo!

Earliest ever~ First ski day this season.

I was very cautious. There’s a good foot and half of snow and with that lots of rocks.

It's Snowing!

This is what it’s doing as of Wednesday Oct. 5 at noon.

The Last Days of Summer…

The last days of summer have offered some great hiking in the Mt. Shasta area.

September has been a great hiking month with all the wildflowers blooming and sunshine!

Relaxing on the top of Black Butte 6,325 ft.

Last Sunday, a friend and I decided to hike up to the top of Black Butte. This butte is actually a plug dome. Actually 4 plug domes are what created Black Butte also once known as Bear Butte, Sugarloaf Peak, Muir Peak and a few other names.

Black Butte Lookout

The lookout was completed in 1931 and was destroyed in October of 1962 during the Columbus Day Storm. The top blew right off. The Columbus Day Storm also known as the Big Blow, ranks amongst one of the most powerful storms to hit the United States. In 1963 a new lookout was built and used until 1973.

Along trail to South Gate Meadows

Now is a good time to check out South Gate Meadows on Mt. Shasta. It’s a relatively easy hike. Around 4 mile round trip(depending how far you go). Hiking to South Gate requires a wilderness permit (fill it out at the trail head.) I saw two groups with dogs~remember no dogs are allowed in the Mt. Shasta Wilderness. It can end up being a pretty hefty fine.

Western Pasque

It’s like being in fairyland with all the seed heads of the western pasque on the trails.

Konwakiton (Muddy) Glacier

This is the view from Upper South Gate Meadows. Being one of the smaller glaciers on Mt. Shasta-50 acres, it has created major chaos with mud and debris flows flooding out the town of McCloud back in the 1920′s and 1930′s.

Shasta Red Fir Cone

Shasta Red Fir is commonly called a Silver Tip on the Christmas tree market. It was discovered on Mt. Shasta in 1879 by a man named John Gil Lemmons. Notice how the cones grow upward. That means it’s a true fir.

Lingering Snow!

For those of you wondering about ski conditions~

This snowfield has potential for a turn or two. It’s a short hike from the Old Ski Bowl.

Here’s the scoop from the Climbing Advisory~Brewer Creek Trailhead:   The route is in good shape and if there are any September skiers out there, this is your best option for skiing Mt. Shasta.  The best skiing is found from the top down toabout 12,000ft….and of course, the “best” skiing doesn’t always mean it’s good skiing! :) But hey, it’s September. Below, one will find dirty, sun-cupped snow down to +/- 9,500ft.. Always be on the watch for rockfall. Also, be mindful when returning to your car as many people become disoriented upon descending below treeline. This route sees sun first thing and softens quickly…get an early start to avoid postholing.

Hot Air Balloon Fair

If your wondering what to do this weekend check out the Hot Air Balloon Fair up in Montague~

http://www.visitsiskiyou.org/blog/2010/09/get-ready-for-the-montague-balloon-fair-sept-24th-26th/

Stop by and say hi to the Siskiyou Sheriff Search and Rescue Team at the Chili Cook Off.

Have a GREAT WEEKEND!

What…Still Snow on Mt. Shasta’s Highway!

What’s going on with the snow melt on the road to the old Ski Bowl???

Everitt Memorial Hwy

It looks like the road is clear past the gate at Bunny Flat. Well…looks are deceiving. I decided to ride my bike up the road and only got a little over a mile before reaching snow. Still lots of snow! It may be awhile yet before the road opens to the Old Ski Bowl.

Bunny Flat Meadows

Snow has melted but still snow up Avalanche Gulch and beyond.

Climbing Conditions are still in great shape-

Fourth of July Weekend!

This week we’ve had some crazy weather.

Major rainfall to very warm temperatures. Looks like beautiful weather for this weekend.

This is the biggest holiday weekend here in Mt. Shasta.

Happy 4th of July!

It all started back in 1888 with the first parade. Today over 5,000 people come from all over to participate in the events offered over the weekend. Here’s the list of events-

and of course…

Current conditions on Mt. Shasta

Avalanche Gulch

Took this picture earlier in the week before the significant amount of rainfall. Snowfall was at around 11,000 ft.

Still snow at Bunny Flat heading up the gulch. Looks like with the warmer temps this weekend, snowpack will consolidate with this last storm.  Take caution of possible avalanche activity with the rain fall and rock fall. The heavy rain on the snow pack actually weakens the snow pack increasing the chances of avalanche activity and possible slides.

Have a fun and safe 4th of July Weekend!

Mt. Shasta Summer Conditions

Summer is finally here!

Bunny Flat Trail Head 6,950 ft.

We still have lots of snow. With these warm temps, it’s melting and beginning to sun cup down low.

Higher on the mountain…

Avalanche Gulch 8,000 ft.

Conditions are sweet!

Timing is everything. Skinned up to Helen Lake Friday Morning. Skied down at 11:00. Perfect corn coming down and then the mash potato mush. From treeline, the boot path up the gulch makes for a great ski back down. Stay in the tracks and zoom down.

Climbers on top of Redbanks

I took this picture from Helen Lake. No wind. Looks like it’s going to be a great climbing weekend.

Top of Broadway 9,400 ft.

For those of you wondering, Sunbowl and Powder Bowl are still skiable (probably not for long) and Green Butte Proper via Sargent’s Ridge Climb still doable. The upper section of the climb is spotty and will take some route finding.

Casaval Ridge

Casaval Ridge still good climbing. Cat Walk is passable. Route finding may be required.

As always, have a great first summer weekend!

Corn Harvest on Mt. Shasta

Spring is finally here until June 21st~Summer Solstice!

Avalanche Gulch-Above Helen Lake

We have an incredible snow pack for the month of June. March precipitation was 258% of normal, pushing our season to 123% of normal. Conditions have been smooth and corny!

Red Banks Close-Up

Climbing Season is in full swing with climbers rolling in for the weekend.

Thumb Rock 12,923 ft.

Current Report from Climbing Advisory-

Avalanche Gulch– John Muir Route (Regular Route) via Bunny Flat Trailhead: This route is in great shape currently. The weekend weather looks to be good, and this route is expected to be crowded. Just because the weather is good does not make the climbing any safer. Rime-ice currently coats the Redbanks and neighboring rocks… many may remember the weekend in June last year when we had a total of 9 helicopter evacuations and 3 ground evacs due to ice fall/rock fall/slips in AG. Conditions will be similar this weekend and we would like to prevent a repeat… PLEASE, wear a helmet, KNOW HOW TO USE YOUR ICE AXE AND CRAMPONS…. self arrest is a MANDATORY skill. Avalanche Gulch… at 6 a.m. …at 12,000 feet is NOT the time to learn. Keep an eye above for rock fall and ice fall and stay out of the main fall line beneath Redbanks. The skiing is good and the general avalanche danger is low. For further reading-

and Skiing…

Top of Powder Bowl

Powder Bowl is in great shape right now~Yes JUNE!

It’s not gonna last long with the warm temps in the forecast.

Yummy Turns

Get an early start to get the perfect corn.

I’ve been skiing down from 10,000 ft. between 11:00-11:30. It’s been just right.

As always, have a great weekend!

Mt. Shasta Exceeds Its Corn Expectations!

Mt. Shasta has the reputation for some of the best spring and early summer corn snow.

This week has been at its finest so far!

Mt. Shasta's Finest Corn

What does Corn mean?

Snow has melted and refrozen into a rough granular surface. The key is to get up early while it’s still frozen and come down as the snow warms up into corn.

Daddy-In-Training

Saw these climbers heading up Avalanche Gulch. She has the right idea!

Heading Up Giddy Giddy Gulch

Friday morning I decided to skin up to the top of Giddy-Giddy Gulch. The name says it all! .

Top of Giddy Gulch

This is around 9400′. There are a few tent platforms already dug out from previous climbers.

Casaval Ridge

Weather is definitely moving in for the weekend.

Sierra Club Cabin (Horse Camp)

There’s a nice path dug out to enter the cabin. Still pretty buried with lots of snow.

The spring and restrooms are dug out but still closed due to lots of snow. Melt  your water and bring Mt. Shasta’s Famous Pack-Out-Bags for overnight trips.

Lenticular Cloud

Took this photo early Friday morning. Sign that weather is moving in. Looks like maybe a little snow this weekend on the mountain. As always, be prepared for winter conditions. Check out latest climbing advisory-

http://www.shastaavalanche.org/advisories/advisories/climbing-advisory

We still have a good 10+ feet at the Bunny Flat parking lot (6950′). Looks like good skiing for a while and a excellent spring and summer climbing season.

Have a great weekend everyone and go out and have some FUN!

Spring Avalanches-Be On Alert!

This has been a very tough week for the backcountry skiing community.
